Niche is a fresh mix of turn-based strategy and simulation combined with roguelike elements. Model your own animal tribe and find an ecological niche in which to live. Keep your tribe alive from dangers such as starving predators, climate change and the spread of disease. Resource management and intelligent reproduction based on real genetics are essential in the Niche. All worlds and animals are procedurally generated. Niche is played from a top-down perspective, giving the player a godly view of the game board. The rounds are a cycle of days, in which the player controls the animals to move and perform actions (collecting food, exploring a new field, mating, attacking a predator, etc.). Animals have a limited lifespan, which makes procreation indispensable. The characteristics of an animal are defined by its genes, which are passed on to the next generation. The challenges come in the form of the death of animals and the depletion of resources. The game is lost when a player's tribe disappears. In the next game a new world is generated, but the previously unlocked genes remain.
