It's a time of war.
Galbadia, a global superpower, has declared war on Dollet, a country whose training academy has two personalities: Seifer, the hot head, and the "lone wolf", Squall Leonhart.

They are both as in conflict with each other as their country is with Galbadia; for others, Squall seems lacking in team spirit, while Seifer lacks the discipline of his rival.
However, a chance encounter with the free-spirited Rinoa Heartilly upsets Squall's universe; after prospering through discipline, Squall finds the carefree Rinoa fascinating.
He also begins to dream that it is the Loire Lagoon, a soldier in the Galbadian army.
