The game tells the story of the legendary sword, "Soul Edge". In the 16th century, the Spanish pirate Cervantes de Leon purchased the sword and with it lay dormant in the ruins of a port city somewhere in Spain, feeding on the souls of those who came to his lair in search of "Soul Edge ".

When he gathered enough strength and was about to conquer the world, two brave warriors - Sophitia of Greece and the Japanese ninja Taki - killed him and smashed one of the two soul blades Soul Edge.

The blade was almost destroyed and, through its magic, brought Cervantes back to life to make him fight a German knight, Siegfried, who appeared in the port city.

Siegfried won, but after reaching Soul Edge he was consumed by its evil. The act released a pillar of light into the sky, the "Seed of Evil", which would bring destruction to the world, and turned Siegfried into the monstrous Nightmare - the new host of the sword.

Three years later, Europe is in turmoil, and Siegfried, possessed by the "Soul Edge", claims more souls to feed the blade. However, a group of warriors decide to take matters into their own hands and embark on a journey to stop the Bust of the Soul and the Nightmare once and for all.
